Double ended dog leads connect to both your dog’s harness and collar, providing extra control. This can be very useful for leash training or allowing for added handling when taking larger breeds for walks.

Not only do they give you improved control but they are also designed to distribute pressure evenly across the dog’s body. When used with a correctly fitted harness and collar, double ended leads provide two safe points of contact, helping to prevent excess pressure from being applied to one spot.

How To Fit A Double Ended Lead

Double leads come with two carabiner clips which are clipped to D-ring attachments on both your dog’s collar and harness. Double ended leads are adjustable so you can get the perfect length between the two connection points.

Depending on the length of your double ended dog lead, it can be used on its own as a standalone leash or you can attach your regular walking lead to it for added length.

Letting your dog off leash is a great way for them to expel excess energy, give them a sense of freedom, and allow them to explore their surroundings. However, even in quiet and seemingly safe environments, it’s not always a good idea to do so.

In this guide we go over the basics of when it’s safe and legal to let your dog off their lead in the UK.

The UK Law

In the UK there is no law which requires owners to keep their dog on a lead in public.

Certain public and private areas may have signage outlining restrictions for dogs, which can include them being on a lead. This means owners need to be aware of these individual requirements whenever they want to take their dog off leash.

Although there is no defined law on dog leads, it is against the law for a dog to be “dangerously out of control anywhere”. According to the gov.uk website a dog is considered dangerously out of control if:

• it injures someone
• it makes someone worried that it might injure them
• it attacks someone’s animal
• the owner

Retractable dog leashes are designed to give your dog a sense of freedom while still giving owners control. When used responsibly they are perfectly safe, but when used in the wrong locations or used with poorly trained dogs by inexperienced owners they can be a serious hazard.

Why do some dog owners think retractable leads are bad?

Collars with handles allow a quick and safe way to stop dog’s from getting into trouble. As many owners decide to attach only a collar when they go outdoors, this leaves only one way to bring a dog back under control. Without a handle it can be difficult and awkward to get firm and safe grip on the collar and gain control when required, especially if you need to act quickly.

Reminder: It is illegal for dogs to be out in public without ID tags.

Handled collars are only available for medium and large breeds. This is due to the minimum size requirements for a control handle to be effective and safe for the dog. Handled collars are also not suitable for puppies as they have more fragile necks and could be harmed when pulling against the handle.
