When developing our hugely popular IDC® Powerharness range, we were aware that many other dog harnesses did not solve a common complaint: 

The clip connecting the dog leash to the harness rubs and knocks against the dog’s back.

Other harness brands can have the leash clip make contact with the dog's back.

This can cause general discomfort and irritation for the dog, especially on longer walks. Owners also raised concerns that sudden snaps of the lead from lunges could cause injury.

In our IDC® Powerharness design we extended the saddle padding to cover more of the dog’s back so the lead clip didn’t rub against the spine. On later designs, we added the ability to strap down the heavy duty control handle. This also helps angle the leash clip to further distance it from the dog’s back.

The Green Zone design principle of JULIUS-K9® harnesses is a feature to not restrict the dog’s movement or breathing while still allowing for maximum control from the handler.

This is achieved by having the harness’s front strap sit in the ideal position across the dog’s chest, with the main focus of pressure being concentrated on the sternum; the tough chest bone running vertically downwards.

Free movement, free breathing

Unlike collars, the special angle of the chest strap allows the IDC® Powerharness to rest on the ideal zone of the chest. This completely frees your dog’s neck for healthy, unrestricted breathing while ensuring free movement for the front legs.

Why chest strap placement matters

An incorrectly fitted chest strap not only can affect breathing, but can also cause other health issues as well as limit the functionality of the harness.

Getting the perfect fit

A well fitted collar should be snug but not tight. The rule to follow is that you should be able to fit two fingers between the collar and your dog's neck. This ensures the collar is comfortable, secure, and safe.

The collar should also be easily adjustable, so as your dog grows, or their weight changes, you can resize it.

How to attach the labels

The labels are interchangeable and can be easily and quickly replaced. They are stuck on with a highly secure hook and loop fastening system. You sometimes see this referred to as ‘Velcro’ by other retailers. The hook and look system we use on all official JULIUS-K9® products is very similar to Velcro. It’s widely used on many products and most people do not notice the difference.

Hook and loop fasteners are not familiar with a lot of people, but we don’t use the name ‘Velcro’ as this is a brand term. That would be like calling all dog harnesses ‘Powerharnesses’.

If you find your dog’s harness moves around and slides to the side, than this is a sign that the harness is not fitted correctly.

A correctly fitted harness should stay in place at all times. It should be snug against the dog’s chest, back, and belly, but not too tight. The rule of thumb is that you should be able to fit two fingers between the harness and the dog’s body.

Why harnesses slip out of position

If the harness slides out of position it could mean the fitting straps have not been secured correctly.

Tight straps will restrict your dog’s movement. If you see your dog walking uncomfortably than this is a sign that the straps have been tightened too much. Loose straps will mean the dog can escape from the harness and the pressure distribution will not work as intended and provide poor control. This could also injure the dog.

Another reason could be that the harness is simply the wrong size. A harness that’s too big or too small will shift out of position, slide to the side, or ride

Double ended dog leads connect to both your dog’s harness and collar, providing extra control. This can be very useful for leash training or allowing for added handling when taking larger breeds for walks.

Not only do they give you improved control but they are also designed to distribute pressure evenly across the dog’s body. When used with a correctly fitted harness and collar, double ended leads provide two safe points of contact, helping to prevent excess pressure from being applied to one spot.

How To Fit A Double Ended Lead

Double leads come with two carabiner clips which are clipped to D-ring attachments on both your dog’s collar and harness. Double ended leads are adjustable so you can get the perfect length between the two connection points.

Depending on the length of your double ended dog lead, it can be used on its own as a standalone leash or you can attach your regular walking lead to it for added length.

Front clip control

If your harness has a front D-ring, you can clip

Collars with handles allow a quick and safe way to stop dog’s from getting into trouble. As many owners decide to attach only a collar when they go outdoors, this leaves only one way to bring a dog back under control. Without a handle it can be difficult and awkward to get firm and safe grip on the collar and gain control when required, especially if you need to act quickly.

Reminder: It is illegal for dogs to be out in public without ID tags.

Handled collars are only available for medium and large breeds. This is due to the minimum size requirements for a control handle to be effective and safe for the dog. Handled collars are also not suitable for puppies as they have more fragile necks and could be harmed when pulling against the handle.
