New dog harness colours and matching leads

Our popular IDC® Powerharness will soon be welcoming some brighter, more vibrant colours. The MoreColor leash collection will also be available in colours matching these new harnesses.

Upon popular request, the handle of the new MoreColor dog leads will be lined with neoprene rubber for added grip and to provide a comfortable hold, even in wet conditions. The lead is made from highly robust recycled materials.

The new harnesses colours will be available in sizes 2XS to 2XL.

The matching MoreColor dog leads will be 1.2m in length, 20mm wide. They’re available with a black or silver carabiner clip for easy and secure

If you are travelling with your dog from the UK to an EU country or Northern Ireland, you need an Animal Health Certificate (AHC). This document verifies that your dog has the necessary vaccinations and parasite treatments to prevent the spread of disease.

The AHC replaced pet passports in January 2021. You cannot use a pet passport when travelling out of Britain. However, pet passports are still used within EU countries and are valid for travel between EU member states.

Getting an Animal Health Certificate

Animal Health Certificates can only be issued by a government authorized Official Veterinarian (OV). To get an AHC, you can contact your veterinary practice to arrange an appointment.

Processes vary from practice to practice, but after you have booked your appointment you are usually sent a form to complete. This form contains information like owner’s details and a description of your dog and needs to be taken to your AHC appointment.

There is no UK wide law covering how many dogs can be walked by one person at the same time. However, local councils have their own rules covering this.

In general, the rules are:

• A maximum number of 4 at once for the general public
• A maximum of 6 dogs at once for professional dog walkers

It is important to remember that this does vary from council from council. Ignoring an individual council’s rules can lead to you being issued a Fixed Penalty Notice of £100.

Public Spaces Protection Order

How many dogs that can be walked at once should be covered by a council’s Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO). As the rules are council dependent, they differ depending on where you are in the country.

These PSPO’s cover a wide range of other dog walking rules, like a complete ban on dogs on beaches, where you’re allowed to take your dog off leash, or making it a requirement to carry

If you’re coming along to the greatest dog show on earth, pop on by and say hello. Our stall will be well stocked with our latest I IDC® Powerharnesses, collars, leads, and accessories.  We can answer any questions you have about sizing and product care. Will also provide demonstrations on how importance it is to correctly fit your dog harness.

The Crufts dog show

The Crufts dog show is the most prestigious event for dog breeders and enthusiasts in the world, and has been running since 1891, making it 133 years old this year.

The event takes places over four days from March 7^th to 10^th 2024 at the NEC Birmingham.

• Day 1: Thursday 7^th. First event is in the Agility Crufts Novice Cup in the Main Arena at 08:15.
• Day 2: Friday 8^th. First event is the Young Grooming Parade at 08:15.
• Day 3: Saturday

In the UK, there is no law mandating the use of lights on dogs at night. So there is no legal requirement for dog owners to put safety lights on collars or harnesses. There are also no laws stating that dogs have to wear any sort of high visibility clothing.

Stay visible, stay safe

 Although it’s not mandatory, using lights on your dog is a highly recommended safety measure at night and in low light conditions, like fog or heavy rain. Increasing your dog’s visibility to other dog walkers, motorists, and pedestrians can help reduce accidents.

If you let your dog off leash to enjoy open spaces at night, using a safety light or hi-vis gear will also make it far easier to keep track of your dog.

Rural dog owners might be very used to walking along country roads after dark with just a torch. But it’s recommended that both the owner and the dog wear reflective clothing to keep visible, even on familiar, quiet roads.

We are very pleased to announce that JULIUS-K9®will be returning to DogFest in Yorkshire and Bristol this September.

The 9^th and 10^th of September dates at Knebworth House, Hertfordshire have been cancelled. This is due to the MET office predicting temperatures over 27 degrees Celsius. These temperatures can get very uncomfortable for dogs, especially if outdoors for long periods.

DogFest have taken the smart decision to cancel the annual event at Knebworth House in the best interests of the canine’s taking part in activities and visiting dogs.

Dogs are comfortable in temperatures between 15-25°C. At hotter temperatures dog’s can overheat, become dehydrated, and suffer heatstroke. Find out more about in our article: Heatstroke and keeping your dog cool in hot weather.

DogFest events in September 2023

DogFest is going ahead as planned in Yorkshire and Bristol:

Slip collars help dogs learn to walk on a lead without pulling. When a dog pulls on a slip collar, it tightens around the neck, which causes the dog to feel resistance. This resistance is what discourages the dog from pulling.

When used correctly, slip collars are a safe and effective way to train dogs. However, they can be dangerous if used irresponsibly or by those not used to canine training.

How slip collars work

Slip collars are made of a narrow band of robust material (usually cord) and a ring at one end. The collar is slipped over the dog's head, and the lead is attached to the ring. When the dog pulls on the lead the collar tightens around the neck. The amount of pressure that is applied depends on how much the dog pulls.

Are slip collars safe?

Like any piece of canine training equipment, slip collars are safe but only if used correctly. When used by experienced trainers slip collars prove a fast, effective, and safe way to train dogs.

How to attach the labels

The labels are interchangeable and can be easily and quickly replaced. They are stuck on with a highly secure hook and loop fastening system. You sometimes see this referred to as ‘Velcro’ by other retailers. The hook and look system we use on all official JULIUS-K9® products is very similar to Velcro. It’s widely used on many products and most people do not notice the difference.

Hook and loop fasteners are not familiar with a lot of people, but we don’t use the name ‘Velcro’ as this is a brand term. That would be like calling all dog harnesses ‘Powerharnesses’.

If you find your dog’s harness moves around and slides to the side, than this is a sign that the harness is not fitted correctly.

A correctly fitted harness should stay in place at all times. It should be snug against the dog’s chest, back, and belly, but not too tight. The rule of thumb is that you should be able to fit two fingers between the harness and the dog’s body.

Why harnesses slip out of position

If the harness slides out of position it could mean the fitting straps have not been secured correctly.

Tight straps will restrict your dog’s movement. If you see your dog walking uncomfortably than this is a sign that the straps have been tightened too much. Loose straps will mean the dog can escape from the harness and the pressure distribution will not work as intended and provide poor control. This could also injure the dog.

Another reason could be that the harness is simply the wrong size. A harness that’s too big or too small will shift out of position, slide to the side, or ride
